What’s All the Fuss Over Cake Eyeliners?

Cake eyeliners are the biggest beauty trend on TikTok and Instagram right now. Bold, graphic eyeliner is a huge hit, but how in the world do those magic makeup artists get those looks with what looks like a dry pot of pigment? Maybe it’s sorcery, or maybe it’s science.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about cake eyeliner.

What is Cake Eyeliner?

Cake eyeliner comes in a small pot with usually one or two colors and is totally dry. You might be confused about how this container of seemingly dried-up makeup works, but all you do is take a precise eye brush, wet it with water or a special liquid designed to turn powder pigments into liquid, and wipe it against the cake liner to activate it. Now, you have the perfect liquid eyeliner that you can apply with your favorite angled or straight brush, depending on your preference and precision.

Cake eyeliner is used for colorful swirls, bright lines, or elegant eye looks. You have total creative freedom over your makeup, so if you’re looking for an outlet of expression, cake eyeliner is a great way to do it.

How to Use Cake Eyeliner

Cake eyeliner is super simple to use, so don’t worry if you don’t yet know what you’re doing.

How to choose the right brush: the shape of the perfect brush depends on the goal of your look. Are you looking for swirly, cloud-like lines? Use a thin, straight brush. Are you trying to achieve a colorful wing? Use an angled eyeliner/eyebrow brush.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Stick It! (recommended)
Cake eyeliner pot (or pots if you’re using a bunch of colors)
● A precision brush (straight, angled, etc.)
● A small bowl of water OR
Eye Dust Elixir (recommended)
Setting spray

Steps:
1. Prep your eyes by washing your face and drying thoroughly.
2. Apply a thin layer of Stick It! or your favorite non-creasing concealer as a base for the liner. Don’t skip this step because proper prep is the key to a bright, long-lasting look!
3. Wet your precision brush with Eye Dust Elixir (or water, if you’re basic like that). The brush should be damp but not dripping with product.
4. Pull the brush against your cake liner of choice and watch it activate into a liquid pigment. Pick up as much pigment as you need and swirl, line, or dot your way to a stunning, unique graphic liner look.
5. Spray your favorite setting spray to lock the pigment in all day. Don’t skimp out on this step!

PRO TIP: For small dots, use the bead end of a bobby pin as a dotting tool. Simply dip the bead into an activated cake liner, and you’re always halfway to TikTok fame.

What are the Ingredients of Cake Eyeliner?

We can’t speak for everybody, but Medusa’s Makeup cake liners are cruelty-free and vegan, meaning we stay far, far away from animal products and ingredients derived from animals.

Acacia gum is one of the ingredients highest on our list. Acacia gum, derived from the acacia tree which is native to Sudan, is a natural thickening agent added to cosmetics and skincare products. It helps to create a smooth feeling of the product and allows pigments to be dispersed properly.

Glycerin is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats (we use the vegetable variety… animals are our friends!) and is a high-impact moisturizer and humectant that helps lock in moisture and keep out free radicals and debris. It’s also an emollient, which means that it helps to soften skin.

We’re proud of our ingredients. Don’t be fooled, our cake liners are anything but cakey and will not dry your skin, so give us a shot!

The Hottest Rave Look

As an added bonus, Medusa’s Makeup cake eyeliners are UV reactive, meaning you’ll stand out from a crowd at a rave or music festival, not to mention the pigments are practically brighter than the sun. UV light or not, our cake eyeliners are seriously powerful and will stay on your eye all day with proper prep, so you don’t have to worry about your look melting off while you’re busy dancing and jumping around.

Our cake eyeliners can also be used on the body for some serious body art. Create bracelets, anklets, or draw a cool mandala on your leg to customize your look. You can also use our products as UV face paint if you want to add some pigment to your lips, cheeks, or anywhere else.
